Why does eating bread make me hiccup??? | SiOWfa16: Science in Our World: Certainty and ControversyThe course website and the blog for the autumn 2016 instance of the Penn State SC200 course Why eat bread makes me hypo? Question: Does anyone else feel that every time they eat bread they get a horrible case of hips?!!! I try to enjoy a slice of bread, cookies, rolls, certain cakes, etc, and BAM.... This happens to me all the time, and I can't imagine why. Am I eating it too fast? Am I eating too much of it at once? Tip? Am I allergic? What's going on?!!! Is there something personally wrong with me? All right, it could be due to chance, but I know there's got to be a correlation between my consumption of baked carbohydrates and my hypo attacks... or maybe, right? I'm not NUTS: If you think I'm crazy and you're reading this as "What is this girl talking about? I've never heard of having bread hips," well, I'm not alone. Take a look at this link to read about some other angry bread eaters: This does not show any evidence or support for a causation, but it shows that this is a legal question that other people are doing too. Suggestive correlations: What's going on: I think a lot of the reason I'm so confused about why I have these sudden hypos is because I'm not so educated in what is a hypo actually. So I did some research. According to a professor of medicine at the University of Calgary, William A. Whitelaw, there are several events in the body that cause them. It states that the main cause is initiated by the expansion of the stomach and the sending of its acids through the throat. This allegedly causes the diaphragm to have a spasm and quickly contract along with multiple other muscles in the throat including the vocal cords. This sudden action causes the sound of a hip, and the precipitation of air in the esophagus causes an additional experience "like the burp." Okay, so now I know how a hiccup is formed, big, but this still doesn't answer why on earth the bread apparently makes this phenomenon happen in my body. So I dug a little deeper... Variables of confusion: Along the way in my research, I discovered some more specific causes of the hypo process – those that can reduce why the particular bread does this to me. According to a popsugar fitness blog, other causes include spicy food consumption, carbonation, alcohol, tobacco and air. Maybe some of these could even be possible third variables. Maybe I tend to eat more bread when I'm eating spicy foods to decrease extreme flavors. Alcohol or carbonated beverages such as soda could also be confused variables because soda or alcohol is often a preferred choice of drinks to match with bread. The article also suggests that fast food and excess food may cause hypo, but there is no scientific evidence to declare a mechanism. Another interesting correlation is indicated in the Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen about celiac disease. In simple terms they defined the disease as a destruction of a lining in the intestines that prevents the ability of the nutrients to flow through the body. Due to damage, the stomach of patients with celiac disease has problems accepting gluten in any way. Consequently, hypo-charges may occur. From this information, it could be suggested that gluten could be a possible cause of hypo, but the person who eats bread has to be a celiac patient... or do they? There's no published evidence. Experimentation...or lack of: From the look of my research, it seems more likely that the correlation between the bread and the hypo is caused by a third variable. However, since there are no previous or published control experiments for this hypothesis, I cannot affirm a conclusion that has sufficient evidence. If I were to create an experiment to test this question, I would do an experimental control test. The participants would thus be divided into two groups with an equal number of men and women in each group. The people of the control group would be free of celiacs and everyone would quickly eat 3 slices of white bread. The experimental group would be celiac patients and would quickly eat 3 pieces of white bread. If the results show that within 5 minutes after the consumption of bread only one of the groups has hypo, then the evidence could support that gluten or fast food caused the hypo. Then he would do the same judgment but he would have to eat bread slowly. If the original results showed that within 5 minutes after the consumption of bread both groups had hypo, then I would do another trial. This essay would be exactly the same, but it would change the y-variable of white bread to gluten-free bread and make the same post procedure as the first rehearsal. Is the bread guilty? Turns out the correlation between bread and hip is much more complicated than I had thought. I apologize with the bread for pointing my finger. It's not fair to blame the bread for my hip. However, due to the lack of experimentation and evidence, I am still skeptical of bread. But since I have no celiac disease, and there are so many possible z-variables that could cause my hypo, I will say "the sock with it!" and keep eating bread. Sources of the article: Post navigation 1 thought of "Why does eating bread make me sick?" Alex Felton I once read about hypo because as you too receive them quite often and found this advice that has worked as a charm for me every time. To get rid of the hips: 1. breathing in 2. swallow twice. 3. Breathe I know how strange this may sound but trust me that this works. Credit: Life Hacks Book Reply Must be to post a comment.
